Xbox’s Phil Spencer Talks Great Games Regardless of Platform
Players know the drill. The veritable tug of war over whose console runs the best specs, has the best fans, best exclusives, and the list runs on ad infinitum. Xbox’s Phil Spencer has a different idea, believing the argument to be an unproductive one in the face of great games.
The company head recently took to twitter expressing his views on the topic. Fans may be surprised to hear that the opinion of someone who would have every right to be biased is actually more centered than you’d think. Here is what Xbox’s Phil Spencer had to say about the great game war:
When specific game discussions turn from playing great games to which piece of plastic I own I feel like we've lost the plot a bit.
— Phil Spencer (@XboxP3) May 8, 2017
Xbox’s Phil Spencer was prompted to make this remark after a fan noted that he had been tweeting considerably about the game Little Nightmares. The game was released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC but Spencer insists that players enjoy the game on the platform they own. This kind of attitude suggests that the head of Xbox is more interested in the content fans are enjoying, rather than the platform they enjoy it on (which can only be good news for the future of gaming) and reinforced that idea on twitter:
“I’ll never feel strange promoting great games.”
This isn’t a new attitude for Xbox’s Phil Spencer or other company heads. Sony’s own Shuhei Yoshida has frequently given positive feedback for games on other platforms. While even facing criticism, Yoshida has gracefully asked fans to simply be themselves, relax, and enjoy their games.
While the console wars rage on, it would seem that companies are focusing more and more on quality content. This kind of fan-focused insight shows a love for the industry that reaches beyond the dollar sign. The understanding that gaming is an experience to be loved, enjoyed, and shared regardless of platform is one that should resonate with fans from every corner of the playing field. Players play for the love of the game and as they say, that which we call a platform by any other name would play as sweet.
