Xbox Game Pass Won’t Be Coming To Rival Platforms Anytime Soon
Phil Spencer revealed at this year’s E3 that Microsoft had the goal of bringing the Xbox Game Pass to as many platforms as possible. Still, while opening the door to the Xbox Game Pass for more and more customers sounds like an incredible and healthy thing for the industry, it seems at the moment that some rival companies have no intention of allowing such a service on their platforms.
Spencer recently spoke in an interview where he replied to a question about whether or not the Xbox Game Pass would be coming specifically to the Nintendo Switch. The Xbox executive claimed that currently there are no plans to bring the Game Pass to closed platforms because, frankly, those companies don’t want it. Instead, Microsoft is going to focus more on platforms open to the idea of having the Xbox brand moved through them. This doesn’t totally rule out the idea of seeing the Xbox Game Pass on platforms like PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch, it just might take a bit more time for other companies to warm up to the idea.
You know, evolution always takes time. There are different strengths that different companies have built through hard work, and some of these changes they might see as disruptive. And they’ll have their own kind of business cadence and pace at which they want to make those changes.”
Spencer also makes it clear that it isn’t a bad thing that other companies aren’t willing to include the Game Pass on their platform as, each business does things differently, and making an unwanted or unneeded change could disrupt the overall balance of what they’re trying to do. Still, he believes that in the long run the console war itself is something that will end up hampering the growth of the gaming industry as a whole. Perhaps having the Xbox Game Pass or some other kind of similar platform would help continue growing the entirety of the gaming community as a whole. Regardless of whether or not companies decide to open up to sharing their consoles with other platforms, the idea of focusing on the growth of the gaming community rather than one individual business is a noble concept indeed.
