Xbox Boss Discusses the Importance of Backwards Compatibility
Xbox One’s backward compatible program has been great for fans of the older 360 games and soon will even bring back games from the original Xbox, hell yeah! That’s why Xbox boss Phil Spencer spoke of the importance of backwards compatibility and describes the program as a way to preserve everyone’s favorite games as an “art form” for the next generation.
In a recent interview, the Executive Vice President of Gaming at Microsoft said that the reason backwards compatibility is important to Microsoft is that keeping these games playable will help to ensure that these older titles won’t be forgotten. The Xbox boss also stated that, despite the money that could be made by selling these older games to new players, they feel that backwards compatibility is good for the industry as a whole.
“I see games as an art form. Console games can get lost when hardware generations go away. It can become more challenging to play the games of our past. There’s something to be learned from experiencing what I played as a kid. There’s good business there for the content owners, but as players, it’s nice to be able to understand how our art form has progressed.”
Thanks to Xbox One’s backwards compatible program, there are now over 400 360 games playable on the console, with more to come.
