The Witcher Netflix Series Finds Showrunner In Daredevil Executive Producer
With TV and film both looking for pre-existing source material with devoted fanbases, video game franchises have certainly been a deep well for stories to tell on screen. Universal and Illumination Entertainment are reportedly working to get a Super Mario animated film off the ground, and Netflix released their first season of a Castlevania animated series this past July. News also broke earlier this year that the streaming giant was working to adapt The Witcher for the small screen. Now, the project is one step closer to reality, as Netflix has found a showrunner for the new Witcher Netflix series.
Variety has exclusively reported that Netflix has brought on Lauren Schmidt Hissrich to act as showrunner and executive producer for the upcoming Witcher show. Hissrich is very close to the company’s production history, as she worked as a writer and co-executive producer on Marvel’s Daredevil and The Defenders series released exclusively on the streaming service. Given the production scale of these franchises, as well as their being adaptations of genre writing, it certainly makes Hissrich a prime candidate to lead the way for this version of The Witcher.
It should be noted that while the series will be expected to appeal to fans of The Witcher games, it will more specifically be adapted from the original novels written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. However, many aspects of both pre-existing versions of the story have their shared elements which will most definitely be seen in the new series. The new show will still be a ways off before it arrives on Netflix, but hopefully this gives the company some time to beg an actor who looks like Geralt of Rivia to portray the titular hero himself. My money is on Mads Mikkelsen.
