Newly Announced The Walking Dead AR Game is ‘Like Pokémon Go With Zombies’ (VIDEO)
It is easy for some to forget the massive cultural impact that Pokémon Go had when it first released for mobile phones last year. Its place in the cultural zeitgeist made it hit news headlines everywhere, and has brought out several AR mobile game projects no doubt inspired by the Niantic-produced game. In the world of television, The Walking Dead has similarly been an overwhelmingly popular cable series that has influenced the greater world culture. Now it appears that the zombie world may be getting influenced by Pokémon Go, as AMC has announced a new Walking Dead AR game, called The Walking Dead: Our World.
AMC announced the new AR game with a trailer release on their official YouTube channel. The video, while not containing actual gameplay, shows several normal people in various locations as they each begin to encounter “walkers” in their real environments. We then see the perspective switch to first person, revealing that each of them are armed with different weapons that remain in the foreground, not unlike a standard FPS or even like the Pokeballs in Pokémon Go. Moving through their environment and fighting zombies, the trailer reveals that some of The Walking Dead series favorites – such as Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon and Michonne – will occasionally come to their aid.
The game has been confirmed to be in development for iOS and Android by Next Games, the company that also created the previous Walking Dead mobile game, titled The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land. While no official release date has been given, the “Coming Soon” description might point to a release closer to the premiere of the new season of the show this October.
