Creative Director Jake Solomon Says He Wants to Make a Horror-Themed XCOM

XCOM 2 creative director Jake Solomon

Despite anyone’s ill-tempered behavior, horror games are all the rage in this day and age. There may not be any rats stuck in a cage, but there are a host of jump scares and brooding evil that awaits players around any given corner.  However, horror titles usually stick to first or third person perspective, places a gun or camera in their hands, and lets them run free. Throw a story in there and you’ve got yourself something that players will enjoy. One genre that hasn’t been very prominent in the scary bits are turn-based strategy titles. XCOM 2 creative director Jake Solomon would like to change that a bit.

In a recent Reddit AMA(Ask Me Anything), Solomon and a few members of the development team hit the web to answer fans’ questions. With the War of the Chosen expansion having only just released a few days prior, what better time to field some queries? Most, of course, were related to the title which Jake Solomon and team are known for. Reddit user MOOMANiBE asked a five-parter, with the creative director focusing on the last one – “Could you ever see yourself doing a civ-coloniation style spinoff that focuses on a micro element of the XCOM experience?” He responded with:

Hell yes. I’ve always wanted to make a campier X-Com set in a single small town, with more of a horror movie vibe to it. Take all the systems but shrink them down to a much smaller scope. Easier said than done, but I always love thinking about it.”

With everyone accustomed to the typical entries in the horror genre, wouldn’t it be nice to offer something up in the style of a turn-based strategy title? One Redditor even thought the idea akin to popular 1990 sci-fi film Tremors, which featured a ragtag bunch of small town residents having to make a base of operations out of the local general store. Of course, this doesn’t solidify anything, but it is wonderful to dream now and again.
