My Chemical Romance Frontman’s Superhero Comic ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Coming to Netflix
Gerard Way, the lead singer of the band My Chemical Romance, created a superhero comic called The Umbrella Academy that will now officially be coming to Netflix. This offbeat, silly comic will become a live-action series containing only 10 episodes and is set for release in 2018.
Netflix confirmed the new show today and announced that Steve Blackman, who is best known for the FX series Fargo, will be taking the role of Showrunner for The Umbrella Academy series. So far it is known that Jeremy Slater will be writing the pilot episode and he is known for The Exorcist TV show on Fox. This show is going to be good!
The Umbrella Academy comic brings us into the lives of a group of siblings trying to work together, despite their differences, to solve the mystery behind their Father’s death. The Monocle, The Kraken, Spaceboy, The Rumor, Number Five, The Seance, The Horror, and The White Violin all have unique super powers that they use to solve the mystery. Both The Umbrella Academy and its spin-off series, The Umbrella Academy: Dallas, totaled 12 issues and won the Eisner Award in 2008 for Best Finite Series/Limited Series. In a press release, Netflix’s VP of original content Cindy Holland said, “These aren’t the usual superheroes, and this series will embrace the singular tone of the graphic novels — dark yet humorous, supernatural yet grounded in reality”.
