Tim Burton Addams Family Spin-Off ‘Wednesday’ Gets First Teaser

Netflix’s big first day of its summer Geeked Week event kicked off with a peek at quite a few new TV shows in the works for the streamer, with new looks at its upcoming live-action One Piece and Resident Evil adaptations proving to be highlights of the bunch. Of course, arguably the most substantial appearance came in the form of Wednesday, a coming-of-age spin-off starring The Addams Family character of the same name helmed by filmmaker Tim Burton.

Revealed in a teaser trailer during the event, Scream actress Jenna Ortega inhabits the title character in typically macabre fashion, sporting her signature pigtails and gothic garb, and snapping away alongside the series’ disembodied hand named Thing. While this footage isn’t very revealing plot-wise, the Tim Burton project is currently premised to follow the dark-humored Wednesday Addams as she attends a boarding school called Nevermore Academy and subsequently develops psychic abilities.

Netflix announced Tim Burton’s long-brewing Wednesday in early 2021, with Al Gough and Miles Millar (Smallville, Into the Badlands) serving as showrunners and co-writers. The past year has been a who’s who of all-star casting announcements, yielding such exciting portrayals as Luis Guzman and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Gomez and Morticia Addams, as well as Gwendoline Christie of Star Wars and Game of Thrones fame playing the strict principal of Nevermore Academy, who “has an axe to grind with her former classmate Morticia Addams,” according to Netflix.

Surprisingly, actress Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in the original Barry Sonnenfeld films, is also slated to return in a mystery role for the Netflix series. As an acclaimed standout of the 90s-era Addams Family and Addams Family Values, it’s intriguing to see Ricci brought back for this project, especially as it’s been near-30 years since stepping into the Addamsverse. While the casting may suggest otherwise, filmmakers behind the project maintain Ricci isn’t playing an older Wednesday Addams in the series, but an undisclosed original character instead.
