The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles Brings Herlock Sholmes To The West (VIDEO)
The Nintendo Switch is still going strong and attracting publishers enough to convince them to bring both new and pre-existing games to the platform. Capcom is one such publisher that has supported the Nintendo Switch since day one. Plenty of Capcom franchises like Street Fighter and Mega Man have seen their classic titles revitalized and updated for the modern Nintendo Switch device. They continued this trend by bringing the classic Ace Attorney Trilogy to the Nintendo Switch, and now they have made an even bigger investment with the series. They have announced that a new localized Great Ace Attorney Chronicles collection for the western Nintendo Switch market is coming this year.
Capcom released a new video detailing the localized Great Ace Attorney Chronicles collection on their official YouTube channel recently. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles consists of two previously Japan-exclusive games, The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures and The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve. These games are prequels to the original Ace Attorney games that focus on Ryūnosuke Naruhodō, the director ancestor of former series protagonist Phoenix Wright. These new versions of the games have now been fully localized for English-speaking audiences, with the option of Japanese or English audio for the voice acting in the game available to players.
One particular aspect of the localization shown off in the video announcing The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles collection is one particular name change. The original Japanese versions of the games included a character meant to be the iconic British detective Sherlock Holmes and his young accomplice who is the daughter of his infamous partner Watson. While the classic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle characters have been in the public domain in many countries like Japan for a while now, ten of his classic Sherlock stories have yet to enter the period where they become public domain, thus a rename for the character was necessitated. To make the connection clear, it seems the localization team went with the simple route of renaming him “Herlock Sholmes” in these English versions. A bizarre choice, but one that certainly has given meme lords a field day on Twitter, which inadvertently helps promote the game for free.
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles collection arrives for Nintendo Switch on July 27th. For American fans wanting to play this previously exclusive game, the decision to purchase this is simply elementary, my dear gamer.
