Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale Less Than a Month Away for U.S. Theatrical Release (VIDEO)

Ordinal Scale

As fans of the popular anime series Sword Art Online (SAO) by Aniplex, this is the moment we’ve all been waiting for. The release of a full length film featuring our favorite heroes, in a world where reality and fantasy collide, is almost here. Finally, after months of waiting, the U.S. release for Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale the movie is just under a month away and we couldn’t be more excited.

Sword Art Online follows the journey of Kazuto Kirigaya and Asuna Yuki, or in game referred to as Kirito and Asuna, as they face the life threatening terrors of a ‘full dive’ virtual reality world that has the ability to kill in real life. The only escape is to beat the game. SAO is an amazing anime filled with adventure, emotion, danger, joy, friendship and heartbreak. It’s almost guaranteed that once you start watching, you’ll get hooked instantly. The sequel to SAO is just as good, in my opinion. Sword Art Online II expands on the virtual world of the original SAO into a much faster paced world of a virtual reality shooter MMO.

With the release of Ordinal Scale, we get a look at an even further advancement of the ongoing theme of virtual reality colliding with the real world. It looks like the walls dividing virtual reality from reality are breaking down bit by bit until reality may eventually become entirely lost inside of virtual reality.

In 2022, the world of virtual reality was upended by the arrival of a new invention from a genius programmer, Akihiko Kayaba. Called NerveGear, it was the first full-dive system and with it, came endless possibilities to VRMMORPGs.
In 2026, a new machine called the Augma is developed to compete against the NerveGear and its successor, the Amusphere. A next-gen wearable device, the Augma doesn’t have a full-dive function like its predecessors. Instead, it uses Augmented Reality (AR) to get players into the game. It is safe, user-friendly and lets users play while they are conscious, making it an instant hit on the market. The most popular game on the system is “Ordinal Scale” (aka: OS), an ARMMORPG developed exclusively for the Augma.
Asuna and the gang have already been playing OS for a while, by the time Kirito decides to join them. They’re about to find out that Ordinal Scale isn’t all fun and games

The movie is set to release in the U.S. on March 9, 2017, and tickets have now gone on sale at select cinemas through Fathom Events. Check out the most recent movie trailer below, and you can watch all 4 trailers and the initial teaser trailer here.

As huge fans of the SAO series, we are super excited to see this movie finally released to U.S. cinemas. Are you all as excited as we are for the U.S. release of Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale?
