Super Mario 64 Turned Into Portal With This Crazy Mod (VIDEO)
Super Mario 64 mods have a long and storied history in creating insane new ways to revisit the popular platformer. Everything from First Person modes, new physics models from other Mario games, and new playable characters like Waluigi have been added via ROM hacks. However, something unprecedented has come recently that seems like a literal game changer.
Kaze Emanuar, one of the most prolific Super Mario 64 modders in the community just released a mod entitled “Portal 3.” As the name implies, it is a ROM hack that inserts the mechanics of Portal into Super Mario 64. Not only that, but it’s also a collection of absolutely new levels designed for the new mechanics introduced. Check it out in the trailer below:
As you can see, these levels really have that Portal look, chunky textures and all. Kaze also provided a video that shows off a couple of these levels and the mod seems to actually retain a lot of the framework of Super Mario 64. You have an Aperture Science themed hub that acts as a stand-in for Peach’s Castle from the original game. It looks like a really cool proof of concept for a Portal-esque mechanic being introduced into a future Mario game.
Kaze’s other work includes a mod that inserts Super Mario Odyssey’s physics and Cappy to the game, as well as a character mod in which players can play as one of the Mario fandom’s more famous fanart creations, Bowsette.
