Street Fighter’s Ryu And Chun-Li Join Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid

Street Fighter Power Rangers

Even as Street Fighter V receives major updates in 2021, the game’s fighters seem to be showing up everywhere as of late. Having already contributed to the roster of Super Smash Bros., the classic fighting series recently saw Ryu and Chun-Li added to Fortnite as playable characters, with the sky seemingly being the limit as to where the duo might wind up next. Well, it appears the martial artists are now entering the Morphin Grid into fellow fighting game Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid.

As revealed in an announcement from IGN, the two Street Fighter characters are set to hit Battle For The Grid sporting their own special Ranger costumes. Arriving on May 25th, the so-named ‘Street Fighter Pack’ DLC sees Ryu don the Crimson Hawk Ranger armor while Chun-Li goes with her own spiky variant called the Blue Phoenix Ranger. A small gameplay showcase featuring the ‘Ryu Ranger’ was shown off in the trailer below, with a small tease of Chun-Li footage following at the end.

Though Battle for the Grid has filled its ranks with many of the most formidable heroes and villains of the Power Rangers saga, the addition of Ryu and Chun-Li might not be too surprising for fans, especially considering the two series’ immediate histories. The two Street Fighter characters had previously been introduced in the 2017 mobile game Power Rangers: Legacy Wars, with the event notably spawning a live-action short film centered around the crossover.

With this in mind, developer nWay cited fan enthusiasm as to why Streef Fighter has returned, with the studio memorably asking fans about a crossover as recently as last September. However, it seems the story of how Ryu and Chun-Li first encountered the Power Rangers was equally sparked by fandom, as Capcom and Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono were actually surprisingly excited to get Ryu and Chun-Li in the mix with the Mighty Morphin team.

“We met with Capcom and it turns out the producer for Street Fighter, Yoshinori Ono, was a big fan of Power Rangers,” Rose Silvestre of nWay’s Community and Marketing team recalled with IGN. “Capcom suggested that it would be cool if Ryu and Chun-Li wore Power Rangers suits and we said heck yeah.”

Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid is out now for PC, Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S via backward compatibility. The Street Fighter DLC drops May 25th.
