Starbreeze Studios Invests $8 Million to Publish Psychonauts 2

Psychonauts 2

Following the ‘critical success’ of Psychonauts, Double Fine Productions has been developing a followup game for a 2018 launch. Psychonauts 2 has had a bit of a bumpy ride finding funding to cover the cost of development and distribution. Having run a successful crowdfunding Fig Campaign, Double Fine was able to raise just over $3.8 million dollars which was over their goal but still possibly not quite what was needed to make the project a success. On February 6th, 2017, Starbreeze Studios signed a publishing agreement with Double Fine to invest $8 million for the production of Psychonauts 2.

The terms of the contract allow for Double Fine Productions to maintain 100% of the intellectual property relating to Psychonauts 2, while at the same time allowing for Starbreeze to recoup their investment. The initial revenue share will show an 85% split going to recoup the investment from Starbreeze Studios until the time their initial investment is fully recovered. Once the initial investment is recouped, Starbreeze Studios will continue to receive a 60% share of the game’s revenue.

As for the game itself, Psychonauts 2 is set to take up right where its predecessors left off. However, this does not mean that players will have had to play either the original Psychonauts game or the VR adventure Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin in order to appreciate and understand the events of Psychonauts 2.

Psychonauts 2 is a third-person action/adventure platformer where players control Razputin Aquato – a newly graduated Psychonaut with powerful psychic abilities – as he delves into the minds of others. The player will use Raz’s PSI powers, such as telekinesis, pyrokinesis, and levitation, in combination with Raz’s acrobatic platforming skills, to explore the mental worlds of the game’s eccentric characters.

In this new story, Raz arrives at Psychonaut headquarters, excited to finally become an official Psychonaut, but soon finds himself torn between the laws of the Psychonauts, his loyalty to his friends, and a secret mission that could undo everything for which he has fought so hard.

If you are a fan of Psychonauts, we’re sure you can appreciate all the time and money that Double Fine Productions and Starbreeze Studios are putting into making this game a reality. We are all looking forward to a continued Psychonaut adventure and, as always, we would love to hear your input, so drop us a line in the comments.
