SpongeBob Monopoly Meme Edition

He may live in a pineapple under the sea, but the animated exploits of SpongeBob SquarePants have greatly ascended to new heights in the modern-day. While the aquatic character’s popularity has afforded a host of new games as well as movies and TV shows, the happy-go-lucky sea sponge has also become one of the internet’s most circulated memes. Various episodes from the cartoon have been immortalized and endlessly shared on social media, and now Hasbro has done the same with its latest edition SpongeBob Monopoly.

As revealed by board game manufacturer The Op Games, the new version of Monopoly sees SpongeBob introduced in a pretty unique fashion. Rather than revolving around real estate, Meme Edition instead cleverly utilizes internet culture, with players vying for popular SpongeBob memes with “likes” and “post engagement” rather than the game’s usual route of dollar currency. Made for 2 to 6 players, the new SpongeBob Monopoly also comes with special player pieces like a Krabby Patty, Squadward’s clarinet, Neptune’s Spatula, as well as the series’ iconic Mini/Wumbo belt.

Those interested in getting the SpongeBob Monopoly Meme Edition can do so on the official The Op website with the board game currently fetching for $39.99 USD. While it’s nice to see Bikini Bottom’s finest getting the tabletop treatment, this isn’t the first time SpongeBob has graced a Monopoly board, with the previous SpongeBob Monopoly from 2005 using more traditional rules and likenesses of various areas and characters from the cartoon.

It’s difficult to come across a public area of the internet that doesn’t have a SpongeBob meme on it, so an accompanying Meme Edition version of SpongeBob Monopoly seems like it was always an inevitability. This is only Nickelodeon’s latest embrace of SpongeBob internet culture, with the company also having released a line of vinyl figurines based on the meme-able likes of Dabbing Squidward, Surprised Patrick, as well as rainbow “Imagination” SpongeBob in 2019.
