Sony Making “Very Smart Moves” With PS5, Says Former Xbox Marketing Director

PS5 Sony

The folks over at Sony held a rather divisive presentation earlier this week wherein PS5 lead Mark Cerny spoke at length about the architecture and system specs of the next-gen console. While there was seemingly plenty for fans to be upset about during the presentation, developers and other gaming industry figures have begun to come forward suggesting that the PS5 is in fact one of the most revolutionary consoles ever designed, even if the fan base doesn’t realize it yet. Now, yet another industry figure has come forward to weigh in on what Sony is doing right with the PS5.

Former Xbox marking director Albert Penello – who left Microsoft back in 2018 – recently offered his thoughts on the PS5 in a thread over on ResetEra. In the thread, Penello notes that he isn’t disappointed in the PS5’s seemingly lackluster raw specs because he never expected Sony to simply be aiming for higher numbers in the first place. “I think they [Sony] are making a couple very smart moves, actually,” Penello said.

Remember, I never thought it [the GPU] was going to be much over 9 teraflops so I’m not disappointed. If this thing is actually $399 I think it’s a great deal.”

Naturally the one issue with that statement is the price, as analysts have previously suggested that Sony wouldn’t be looking to sell the PS5 at a loss, and as such the price of the console would likely end up around $499. Still, there’s something to be said about what the PS5 is aiming to do in terms of eliminating wait times and offering a consistent experience over an always-fluctuating cooling system. I can practically hear my PS4 chugging along from 3 miles away, so any improvement on that is great in my book.

The PS5 is slated to release Holiday 2020.
