Microsoft Reportedly Wants To Acquire Discord For $10 Billion

Microsoft Discord

Microsoft is undoubtedly in the acquisition business these days, and business appears to be booming. Following the recent high-profile acquisition of ZeniMax Media, a new report suggests that the popular chat platform Discord could be next to join the ranks of Microsoft. This development initially came from VentureBeat, with “sources familiar with the matter” suggesting Discord is not only looking to sell its community-centered software but has opened up discussions with a single party for a possible $10 billion acquisition.

Of the potential buyers, Microsoft was named as one of the companies in contention, with additional reporting from Bloomberg further backing up these claims. Though the PC giant is discussed as a major frontrunner for the buyout, Microsoft isn’t yet confirmed to be the one in talks with Discord, only that the company is definitely interested in doing business. Regardless of who the unnamed company is, VentureBeat claims proceedings are likely in “final negotiations,” but still aren’t a done deal.

Adding to the deal’s unsealed status, a source with Bloomberg submits that Discord may “likely” decide to go public rather than go through with an acquisition. Alternatively, a source with VentureBeat suggests otherwise, saying Discord is still in a “growth phase” and it may be too early for the company to go public at this time. Regardless, Microsoft nor Discord has yet to release a response to these reports, meaning an official answer might not be made known for at least a little while.

Considering Microsoft’s aspirations to provide the most complete package with its platforms, adding Discord to the mix honestly wouldn’t be the most surprising news in the world, especially as the chat app already features integrations with the Xbox ecosystem. Benefits might also extend to Discord’s side of the aisle. As use of the community hub becomes increasingly widespread during the current pandemic, Microsoft would be among the best-suited to capitalize on the platform’s growth and potential.

What do you think? Would you be interested in Microsoft acquiring Discord, or would you rather the chat app continued to stay its own entity?
