Rumor: “Batman: Arkham Insurgency” Leaks Reveal Major Info About Potential Upcoming Title
The Dark Knight returns, well, if a recent rumor is to be believed. A Reddit post is making the rounds that claims Warner Bros. Montreal, the studio behind the prequel game Batman: Arkham Origins, is creating a new entry in the series titled “Batman: Arkham Insurgency.” The original post has been removed, but it’s since been archived. News of a new Batman game is not surprising, as it falls in line with what we’ve heard in the past. The convincing post shares a few tidbits regarding several aspects of the unconfirmed game, including gameplay, setting, story, as well as its placement in the Arkhamverse timeline.
According to appropriately-named user IAmBatmanArkham, Arkham Insurgency has been in development since 2014 and will inhabit the same game engine as Batman: Arkham Knight. Though reception of the last game was very positive, at least for the console versions, a mixed response of the title’s Batmobile sections have apparently encouraged WB to tweak the driving portions of Arkham Insurgency. They will instead focus more on fast-paced chase sequences, and less on frustrating “battle mode” missions. Hand-to-hand combat is also stated to be “improved” with greater emphasis being placed on timing-based counters and attacks, making the game less of a button-mash and a tad more in-depth.
The game’s story is supposed to take place roughly three years after the events of Arkham Origins, making Arkham Insurgency a prequel to the events of Rocksteady’s trilogy of entries in the series. Events will be set in motion when a mass breakout is staged at both Blackgate Prison and Arkham Asylum, freeing a large amount of Batman’s rogues gallery. Batman will (obviously) be returning as the main character, with the addition of Robin being playable in the main campaign. The game’s map will cover the rarely explored coastal area of Gotham City and is claimed to be “the same size as the three islands from Arkham Knight.” The poster also says WB is working towards the goal of making every building in the game enterable.
Owlman, Batman’s evil counterpart, is to be the main antagonist of Arkham Insurgency, with the villain leading a mysterious group called the Court of Owls, who will likely be responsible for all the prison breaks. Several other villains, the Reddit post says, will be making their debut appearance in the game but wouldn’t exactly be considered top-tier:
- Anarky
- Blockbuster
- Cornelius Stirk
- Dala
- Dollmaker
- Dusan al Ghul
- Killer Moth
- Mad Monk
- Maxie
- Tweedledee and Tweedledum
- Ventriloquist
- Zeus
Joker and The Riddler are said to appear as well, but it’s hardly surprising as the two have been a thorn in Batman’s side in every Arkham game thus far. An interesting addition to the villain roster is Two-Face. His absence from Arkham Origins could mean a potential portrayal of his transformation from respected District Attorney Harvey Dent into the ruthless coin-flipping Two-Face somewhere in the game’s story.
Even though absolutely none of these details have been confirmed, they do paint an admittedly intriguing picture for Batman’s next video game outing. We’ll know if these claims are correct sooner rather than later as Arkham Insurgency‘s official announcement is stated to be scheduled for March 8.
