PS5, Next Xbox “Not Necessarily” Prioritizing 4K, 60 FPS

There’s been a load of speculation as of late regarding the future of console gaming and what the possibilities hold for the inevitable incoming hardware. Following the focus of 4K and 60 fps gameplay in PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X, the future would seem likely to follow suit with Sony’s PS5 as well as Microsoft’s “Scarlett” project. However, inclusion of these features in next-gen consoles may not be as cut and dry as people would assume.

In an interview with GamingBolt, founder and CEO of Forge Studios Stefano Pinna spoke on his hesitancy to call higher resolution and frame rate a done deal for the next generation, ultimately suggesting it may not be up to the hardware to decide. Pinna explained that developers would likely prioritize a console’s power to suit a specific game, “not necessarily” to uphold the crisp polish of 4K and 60 fps.

I think each developer is still going to decide where he wants to put the new power available. You can steer that in higher resolution and fluidity or you can put insane amount of visual fidelity on screen and render it at lower resolution or a bit less fluid… let’s say that a current-gen game, visually astonishing as a Naughty Dog game can be, would probably run 4K/60 FPS with new amazing tech features added… if you want more visual fidelity than that, we are going to lose either FPS or resolution.”

Even with the current influx of titles touting a glorious frame rate an/or an epic resolution, Pinna does present a compelling point. The appearance of a game can only go so far before other aspects begin to suffer. Developers for PS5 and Scarlett may wish to utilize the extra wiggle room in experimental ways rather than flexing their beefy presentation. I mean, how else are we going to get 1000-player matches in Fortnite?

What do you think? Do you feel that 4k and 60 fps are a must for PS5 and the next Xbox?
