PlayStation TikTok Channel Created By Sony, Backlash Ensues (VIDEO)
Since the popularization and ubiquity of social media this past decade, big gaming companies have attempted to use them to their full advantage. Nintendo has opted to use social media for Nintendo Direct presentations and Sony has often used social platforms to promote the launches of games like Spider-Man in the past. Perhaps the biggest new platform to garner attention this year was TikTok, the video-sharing and music video dubbing app rising in popularity with younger users. Now, Sony has announced that they have started a new official PlayStation TikTok account, much to the scorn of some fans.
Sony announced their official TikTok account on Twitter earlier this week, the verified account currently boasting over 164,100 followers and 239,400 likes with only two videos currently available on their profile. The first shows a PlayStation board room crashed by an older exec wearing a backwards hat and skateboard, telling the employees that PlayStation should start a TikTok account. The other video shows an employee mimicking a rest in Death Stranding whilst cuddling the BB pod included in the Collector’s Edition of the game. Both videos can be viewed below.
Despite the quick fan following the TikTok account received, many PlayStation fans on Twitter replied to the announcement with scorn. Numerous users have suggested that Sony should delete the account, while one particular fan went as far as to threaten to block PlayStation on Twitter.

While some of this response appears to just be the usual dank meme-ry of the internet, it seems that many may legitimately dislike TikTok, perhaps on the basis of its teen demographic appeal. Either way, it would appear the PlayStation TikTok is here to stay, with the account being just another of Sony’s horses in the back they can use whenever they need to bring a game announcement to that New Town Road online.
