Pacific Rim 2 Starts Filming and We Finally Have an Official Title

Today Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor John Boyega confirmed that the sequel to the 2013  monster vs robot slugfest Pacific Rim has begun filming. The news comes by way of an Instagram photo the young actor posted (which you can see below) and features a copy of the script revealing the fims title as well as the following caption: “First day on Pacific Rim today. Here’s to a great adventure ahead.”

Pacific Rim centers around a future where giant monsters known as Kaiju arise from the earth’s oceans bent on humanity’s destruction. The nations of earth band together in an tempt to stage off the invaders by building giant robot weapons called Jaegers that are powered by 2 human pilots linked together by a neural bridge.

The sequel has had its trouble getting off the ground over the past few years with losing directors, multiple drafts of the script being pinned, and at one point – there was the question if the movie was even going to be made at all. The giant robot flick will star the aforementioned John Boyea taking over the leading role for Charlie Hunnam. Daredevil showrunner Steven DeKnight will direct with a script written by Jurassic World’s Derek Connolly. Guillermo Del Toro remains a part of the production as an executive producer. Pacific Rim: Maelstrom is slated to hit theaters on February 23, 2018. It will be interesting to see what the next chapter of this sci-fi action saga holds, especially given what we learn about the origins of the Kaiju from the previous film.
