John Carmack Fires Back in Response to Oculus Lawsuit Verdict, Claims He Did Not Copy Source Code
Earlier this week, we published a rundown full of details regarding the Zenimax vs Oculus Lawsuit, as well as its resulting $500 million punishment for Oculus. While the larger portions of the punishment were more directly tied to Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey and former CEO Brendan Iribe, another key Oculus player involved in the allegations is John Carmack, the company’s Chief Technology Officer. Carmack, previously known for being the co-founder of id Software, has decided to use his knowledge of coding and programming to further defend the company in a new Oculus lawsuit verdict response.

The post seen above was written by John Carmack on his Facebook profile, in response to the verdict that hit Oculus. In the response, Carmack iterates that he did not intentionally or otherwise try to tamper with evidence related to the case and that he disagreed with the expert witness at the trial who explained to the jury that Carmack’s VR code from his time at id Software was “non-literally copied.” Carmack claims that the Oculus staff never had access to the id C++ VR code, aside from ” a tiny bit of plaintext shader code from the demo.” Carmack further defends the code’s similarities to the C++ VR code by comparing it to the similarities between stories that follow the structure of the monomyth. As he states: “If you abstract Harry Potter up a notch or two, you get Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, which also maps well onto Star Wars and hundreds of other stories. These are not copyright infringement.”
Carmack finishes his statement by questioning the expert witness’s intentions, implying that the high amount of payment that expert witnesses receive could persuade his objective testimony. He believes that expert witnesses should have their testimonies made as public as any academic report. What do you guys think about Carmack’s Oculus lawsuit verdict response?
