Final Fantasy XV’s New Magitek Exosuits Will Be Delayed Due to Similarities to the New Power Rangers

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Square Enix’s infamous RPG (role-playing game) series, Final Fantasy (FF). Among the events taking place to celebrate, developers announced new DLC (downloadable content) for the latest entry in the series, Final Fantasy XV. The DLC was to include four new outfits, dubbed the Magitek Exosuits, for the characters in FFXV. Unfortunately, those new suits will be delayed due to their resemblance to the new Power Rangers costumes.

The Magitek Exosuits were originally set to release on February 21, and would give the characters a 30 minute invincibility boost once every 24 hours. While the costumes look awesome, the similarities to those worn by the cast of the upcoming Power Rangers film are just too close for comfort. In the image above you can see what the costumes in FFXV were supposed to look like. Below you can see the image of the costumes from the upcoming movie.

On February 2, during Square Enix’s live stream show Active Time Reportit was announced that due to the likeness the new in-game costumes will be released “at a later date.” After being contacted by Saban’s company about the similarities, the development team needed to address the situation.  During the live stream, Square Enix Marketing Manager Akio Ofuji went on record to say:

“We were told to be careful with what we say [about this]. So, I will let everyone know what’s going on. We spent the day looking into various things, and what we’ve decided is to redo the design.”

FFXV director Hajime Tabata added:

“They don’t look exactly the same, and as for the copyright, even if these are our original designs, it seems like they will cause problems for others.”

No official timeline has been given for when the new suits will be available for Final Fantasy XV. The costumes will remain a free DLC pack when the team finally releases them, but for now they will have to scrap their original idea. What are your thoughts on the situation? Do you think Saban’s company has the right to “contact” Square Enix over the Magitek Exosuits’ similarities to that of the Power Rangers?
