The “Next Generation” Pushes Lightning McQueen Too Far in New Cars 3 Teaser (VIDEO)

The newest Cars 3 teaser went live yesterday and it shows off a next generation race car that will rival series protagonist Lightning McQueen in his quest to win the coveted Piston Cup. This task may well be too much for him to handle as it results in McQueen suffering a devastating accident as shown in this, and in previous trailers. This wreck parallels a similar accident experienced by retired Cars character Doc Hudson, whereas he was sidelined by a racing injury as well. You can check out the trailer for yourself below:

Cars 3 looks to be taking a somewhat darker approach with the upcoming threequel, touching on themes of trauma, recovery, and redemption. This is especially apparent when compared to the relatively carefree “secret agent Mater” plot of Cars 2. The official synopsis provided by Disney reveals a bit more about the story of McQueen’s road to recovery.

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez (voice of Cristela Alonzo), with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!”

Also featured in the trailer was seemingly the voice of Doc Hudson, a mentor figure to Lightning McQueen, voiced by the late great Paul Newman. Seeing as Newman’s Doc “Hudson Hornet” character was also written to have passed away after the events of the first movie, it’s currently unclear how he will feature in Cars 3 other than the words of wisdom he speaks in the trailer. Perhaps he appears in a Mufasa-style dream sequence? I guess we’ll have to see for ourselves when Cars 3 races into theaters on June 16th.
