The question “Who will be cast as Cable in Deadpool 2?” is on everyone’s minds as of late.  I would even go so far as to say that there is currently more hype towards the answer to this question than there is hype for the Ryan Reynolds-fueled sequel itself.  Tons of names have been thrown into that particular hat from Kiera Knightley, Stephen Lang, and even James Bond himself: Pierce Brosnan. Until now, Deadpool 2‘s director Rob Liefeld has kept quiet on the Cable casting news front, aside from this little gem below.

Here's what I know. Cable is the hottest role in Hollywood. The line goes out the door and off the lot. Believe it!

The keyword being, of course, ‘until now’. Rob Liefeld recently took to Twitter once more, this time to suggest to Gladiator vet Russel Crowe that he read for the part of Cable, for both the upcoming Deadpool 2 and the recently announced X-Force films.  Now, this is all well and good, but suggesting that such a high-powered Oscar-winning star like Russell freakin’ Crowe has to READ for a part may have tilted the accomplished actor, as you can see from his response below, which came about half a day later.  Because Russell Crowe is nothing if not a handsome ball of swagger and hard edges.

Try to picture him saying that with a dangerous glint in his eyes.  Go ahead, I’ll wait.  Anyways, Rob Liefeld was quick to backtrack a bit, with a Tweet that simply stated “Huge fan sir.  Poorly worded.  Apologies.” He also offered up a rough depiction of what Russell Crowe might look like as Cable, in what I can only assume was a hastily-drawn-while-sweating-profusely sketch.

Russell Crowe is no stranger to action films, having starred in Gladiator (as mentioned above), Robin Hood, and Man of Steel as Superman’s father, Jor-El.  He’s also no stranger to the comedy genre either, having most recently starred alongside Ryan Gosling in The Nice Guys.  Plus, given how recently this conversation took place, one could surmise that the role of Cable hasn’t been cast just yet, so this could happen!  As of now, the tentative start date for filming Deadpool 2 is set for May of this year, so chances are we will be hearing a casting decision soon.
