New Sega Genesis Game Launching Nearly 30 Years After The Console’s Release (VIDEO)
If you aren’t still rocking your old Sega Genesis console (Mega Drive for those outside the US), it might be time to start hitting up every thrift shop, resale store, or garage sale in your local area. While the system may have arrived almost three decades ago, it looks like one developer has taken it upon himself to breathe new life into it. That’s right, a new Sega Genesis game is on the way, and it’s coming soon!
Matt Phillips, who is based in the UK, has been hard at work creating Tanglewood, a new Sega Genesis game. Using an old Mega Drive development kit with a PC running Windows 95, which Philips has had to repair more times than he can count throughout the process, a new game has been born for an old console through the use of technology original to the era. “I like to work with the restrictions of the system itself rather than making it for a modern PC on a modern engine,” Phillips said to the BBC. “I’ve done a lot of that in my lifetime. I’m getting a bit bored of that.” We’re certainly glad he’s getting bored of the modern stuff. After all, look at these screenshots:
Set in a fictional world, the game follows a young creature, Nymn, who is separated from the family pack after the sun sets. Unable to get back to the safety of the underground home, Nymn must find a way to survive the night terrors and get to morning. TANGLEWOOD’s world is a dangerous one after dark, and Nymn must use skills of evasion, special abilities, traps and trickery to defeat predators.”
Tanglewood is expected to “begin shipping approximately June 2018.” Each cartridge will come in a box with cover art and a game manual. PC gamers needn’t worry, however, as the title will be ported to the platform at some point in the future. Those who wish to pre-order the new Sega Genesis game can do so right here, and a demo is currently available to download for the PC version.
