Multiplatform Square Enix Games Will Be More Common, Says Company Executive

Multiplatform Square Enix

Gamers who grew up with Square Enix games on earlier console generations will likely remember that the company’s games used to only be released for one platform at a time. Most of Square Enix’s 8-bit and 16-bit era games, including the first six Final Fantasy games, would only release on Nintendo consoles until they became PlayStation exclusives with the introduction of the console by the same name. This has changed in more recent generations with titles like Final Fantasy XV releasing on multiple platforms. Now, recent comments from the CEO of Square Enix are confirming that multiplatform titles will become a more frequent occurrence in the future.

Square Enix recently hosted a financial call for investors, during which the company’s CEO Yosuke Matsuda spoke directly to the investors present. Matsuda acknowledged the company’s more recent initiative to make their IPs available for more platforms, and to have fewer exclusives. It seems that the company intends to only make multiplatform games more common, saying: “Growth in the number of platforms is basically a good thing, and we intend to further advance our multiplatform approach.”

The near future of Square Enix’s releases already seem to be going multiplatform. Kingdom Hearts III will be the first in the series to launch on both a PlayStation and Xbox, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider will also release on those consoles in addition to PC. There are still some games currently listed as exclusives such as Octopath Traveler, but with comments like this coming from the CEO, fans can hope that maybe the future is looking less restrictive.
