Mavericks: Proving Grounds Battle Royale Game Canceled
Back in 2017, developer Automaton unveiled an ambitious game they were working on called “Project X”. From the outset, the game was advertised with the feature of having up to 1000 players in a single match. The game would also have a battle royale mode with 400 players. These lofty goals immediately attracted the interest of PUBG and Fortnite players, with ideas that would shake up the Battle Royale formula. Automaton CEO and CTO James Thompson said the map for what was eventually revealed to be called Mavericks: Proving Grounds would feature four faction towns and other narrative spins. Story hasn’t really been a focus for Battle Royale games, with even the likes of PUBG featuring zero narrative until recently. With ambitious promises though, comes the need for the big delivery.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like we’ll ever get to see if Mavericks: Proving Grounds would have lived up to expectations. Automaton posted today on their website that they have filed for bankruptcy and will stop development on the game. You can read the statement from Automaton’s website below.
