Marvel’s Avengers Has Co-Op, But “Just About Everything” Can Be Played Solo (VIDEO)

Marvel’s Avengers Has Co-Op, But "Just About Everything" Can Be Played Solo (VIDEO)

Square Enix recently showcased the first footage for Marvel’s Avengers at E3 2019, and the the upcoming game looks to be nothing short of a superhero blockbuster. Even with the promise of a spectacular, story-driven experience and “multiple years” of post-launch narrative, there’s still quite a lot left unknown about the Marvel title’s gameplay, specifically when it comes to single and multiplayer modes.

Lead Designer for Marvel’s Avengers Philippe Therien and Senior Producer Rose Hunt recently spoke on the subject with Eurogamer, shedding light on the game’s co-operative focus and how it may affect those who’d prefer to play solo. Shown off at E3, the game’s opening moments notably begin on a team-based mission, battling the villainous likes of Taskmaster as his forces overrun the Golden Gate Bridge.

Therien and Hunt suggest this scene acts as an introduction to the co-op focused main campaign, but the mode will also leave room for people with more solo sensibilities. “We’ll start people with a single-player campaign story, then soon after the intro to the game you’ll be able to go off and play multiplayer,” Rose Hunt explained. “There’s also a way for people to play multiplayer straight off the bat if they want,” Therien added. “We’ll support both ways.”

We’ve got a cool mix of melee and ranged combat going on, some characters that only work one type or the other. Because we have both multiplayer and campaign you’ll see cases where sometimes the experience is more directed, or some places you’ll just be left to your own devices and left to work out what to do. The Avengers go to many different places in this game, it varies where you’re at.”

Whether by playing the as a team or as a lone protector, Marvel’s Avengers seems to be an experience built for either type of playthrough. Philippe Therien affirmed as much in another recent Q&A session, confirming the main campaign is “just about” as playable in single-player as much as co-op. “You can play just about everything by yourself if you want to, but absolutely I would strongly encourage people to just gather your friends and go play the game.” he said. “But yeah, most of the stuff you can play by yourself.”

Marvel’s Avengers releases for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 15th, 2020.
