Lenovo Phab 2 Pro Phone Gives Us True AR Capabilities

Phab 2 Pro

A few months after the release of Niantic’s Pokemon Go, which just announced daily bonuses, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro smartphone is here to bring you the first fully capable augmented reality (AR) phone that has the necessary software and hardware to use Google’s Tango AR technology. Tango Chief Johnny Lee said that even though Pokemon Go did not speed up their consumer timeline it did make conversation with their partners easier. Pokemon Go used a simpler version of AR, but it was enough to let people see how great it can be to interact with the software in the real world. Chief Lee said, ” “It’s the idea that you can use physical space in a shared context… The location-tracking capabilities of Tango can be the same vehicle for shared context between people.”

Google and Lenovo want to show that AR could become an important part of modern smartphones. The Lenovo Phab 2 Pro is selling for $499, which is a pretty great deal for such an intricate piece of technology. Especially when  Microsoft’s prototype HoloLens headset is said to be going for $3,000. Google is wanting to put the Tango technology into more phones in the future. According the the Chief, there will be even more devices with these 3D mapping capabilities , but not just Lenovo’s.

The one downside to the Phab 2 Pro is its large size. As you can see above, it barely fits in one hand, but if the only complaint is that it’s too big and shiny, we don’t think it’ll be much of an issue. The greatest part of the smartphone? The powerful camera and large display gives you the ability to take in the whole room with virtual objects placed over the everyday scenery. They also let you play out scenes on your phone screen without placing your fingers on the touchscreen thanks to gesture control. With over 35 different apps already available from games, to more practical things like apps that let you see furniture pieces in your home before committing to buying them, this technology is going to be big.
