Id Software Director Leaving Studio After 24 Years
Following over 24 years at the company, studio director at id Software, Tim Willits, has announced his upcoming departure from the famed shooter developer. Revealing the news over social media, Willits expressed thanks to his peers in the gaming industry, as well as his intent to formally leave id following QuakeCon later this month.
Having joined the company in 1995, Willits contributed generously to the DOOM and Quake franchises as a level designer, eventually rising through the ranks to serve as studio director for several key releases such as 2016’s DOOM, Quake Champions, and more recently with Rage 2. This lead credit also applies to the upcoming sequel DOOM Eternal, and while his departure might signal otherwise, Willits assured development will continue as planned for all current projects.
All of the games currently in development are in very good hands, my departure will not affect any planned releases. id Software is packed full of amazing talent that will continue to develop (long into the future) some of the best shooters in the world.

The id Software director confirmed more details about his departure will arrive after QuakeCon in a few weeks’ time, the company’s annual event taking place in Grapevine, Texas between July 25th and July 28th. Willits additionally teased some “exciting” projects he has lined up next, though they aren’t likely to be unveiled until after QuakeCon, especially as the 2019 event has been dubbed the “Year of DOOM.”
After QuakeCon I will announce my future plans, where I am going, and what new exciting things I am doing. Stay tuned.
