Horizon Zero Dawn Lead Writer Discusses Cut Content, Inspiration For The Game’s Story

Horizon Zero Dawn Lead Writer AMA

Horizon Zero Dawn is a phenomenal game, one that is more than deserving of its Game of The Year nomination and other accolades. One of the title’s finest points is its story, which was one of the subjects of a recent Reddit AMA between Horizon Zero Dawn lead writer Ben McCaw and the voice of Aloy, Ashly Burch.

Reddit AMA’s typically happen much the same way each time, with Redditors putting out questions and comments and the hosts choosing which comments and questions to respond to and address. One such question was in regards to game content that didn’t quite make it off the drawing board. When asked what the “biggest or coolest” element from the story was that he wishes made the final cut, the Horizon Zero Dawn Lead Writer responded stating that his favorite content involved sending Aloy deep into the Oseram territory of the Claim.  “This question made me take a walk down memory lane,” McCaw said. “We had a quest line that had Aloy visit the Oseram territory of the Claim at one point. She was definitely going to shake things up a bit.” When pressed for further info McCaw remained silent, though sometimes that’s how things go with AMA’s.

At another point in the AMA, the discussion shifted to how amazing an opportunity it was for Guerrilla Games to work on a title for the PlayStation 4, with McCaw revealing that Sony was fully supportive of their mission throughout development. “In addition to making it a kick-ass story about machines and tribes and epic threats to the world, we wanted it to be personal,” said McCaw.

We wanted it to be about bonds of love that cross generations, ties that can survive any destructive force. And on a very basic level, we wanted it to be about a woman’s search for her mother. We hope that came through, and from the response, it seems like it has.”

Horizon Zero Dawn is now available exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
