New HBO Series ‘Confederate’ Announced From the Creators of the TV Show ‘Game of Thrones’

A new HBO series has been announced for the team behind Game of Thrones as the show inspired by George R.R. Martin’s books nears its in. We may have another (short) season to look forward to, as well as a few spinoffs in talks, but that doesn’t mean that the creators behind the popular fantasy series is set into the one franchise. Both David Benioff and DB Weiss have announced their latest project for HBO for their series called Confederate. The show itself is set to be in a future America that sounds as much of a ride as their run with Game of Thrones.

Production will begin promptly after the next, and final season, of Game of Thrones wraps up. Once those loose ends are tied, the team behind Confederate are set to immediately dive into making this alternative future a reality. According to HBO, this is what interested fans have to look forward to,

Confederate chronicles the events leading to the Third American Civil War. The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone–freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall.”

According to the duo, the idea for this new series has been around for awhile now and that even though there are no white walkers and dragons, they are still commited to creating an entire new world for people to enjoy. In a recent statement they mentioned,

We have discussed Confederate for years, originally as a concept for a feature film,” they said. “But our experience on Thrones has convinced us that no one provides a bigger, better storytelling canvas than HBO. There won’t be dragons or White Walkers in this series, but we are creating a world.”

Though we do not have an official start date with when this new show will begin production, we can guess that it’s a few years from now given that Game of Thrones season 8 hasn’t even begun their process of filming. More details about the upcoming show will surely follow but at least Westeros fans know that they have an epic season to look forward to and several other related works in the process.

What do you think about the upcoming project from these two creators? Does it seem like something that would catch your eye or does the world of GoT firmly have your heart?
