Half-Life: Alyx No VR Mod Now Available On PC (VIDEO)

Half-Life: Alyx

Regarded as one of the most anticipated games of the year, Half-Life: Alyx has managed to largely live up to the hype with critics and fans lauding its compelling premise and skillful integration of virtual reality. While Valve’s return to the world of Black Mesa certainly has its fans, there’s still a sizeable group of gamers that have yet to experience Alyx for themselves–mainly, those without the immersive means of a VR headset.

Fans interested in playing Half-Life: Alyx without VR can now do so with the help of a new mod. As reported on Prima Games, a modder with the handle ‘r57zone’ is offering PC users a nifty mod dedicated to removing VR from Alyx. Available for TrueOpen VR and Steam VR clients, the mod not only ditches the extra dimension but also trades the original’s support for motion controls for a more traditional keyboard-and-mouse setup. A gameplay video of the mod in action can be viewed below.

Those interested in setting up a no-VR mode of Half-Life: Alyx can do so through the mod’s GitHub page or by checking out r57zone’s official Patreon. Taking Alyx out of the virtual realm is something Valve anticipated and even encouraged the modding community to pursue, with the game’s developer confident fans would ultimately prefer the VR version in the end. Whether that could be the case is solely up to the player, but it can’t be denied that playing without the immersion of VR does take away from some of the game’s more satisfying qualities.

Half-Life: Alyx is available now for PC.
