‘Gears 5’ Is An Opportunity To “Bring In The New,” Says The Coalition
With the Gears of War franchise dropping the “of War” part for the next entry, it would appear that the developer intends on bringing in new ideas that are beyond just a simple title adjustment. Gears of War 4 was the first main game in the series not to be developed by Epic Games, and now that The Coalition has their feet firmly planted in that realm, they’ll be bringing in even more changes with Gears 5.
The Coalition boss Rod Ferguson recently spoke with Nerdbunker about Gears, saying that their first entry into the series was so they could establish their ability to provide an experience faithful to Epic Games’ titles. Gears 5, however, will be an opportunity for the developer to branch out with new ideas and possibly mix things up a bit.
Speaking about Gears 4, Ferguson said, “Basically, it was a reaction to what we want to do with the franchise. We were a new team, a new studio, Gears was coming back after being on the shelf for a while, and we didn’t want to mess with the formula, we didn’t want to change it too much because we wanted to prove that we can build an authentic Gears of War experience. Now that we have done that and people have accepted Gears 4 now it is an opportunity with Gears 5 to bring in the new.”
“We really want to show what we want to do with the franchise and where we want to take it,” he continued, “whether it is changing core mechanics, the way we do storytelling, or the way to make certain aspects around controls and gameplay, or whether it is reaching with new types mobile gameplay and tactics on PC.”
Gears of War 4 may not have been the best entry in the series, but that isn’t stopping The Coalition from pushing forward and bringing their own ideas to the Gears universe. Either way, we’ll find out exactly what they have planned when Gears 5 drops at some point in 2019 for PC and Xbox One.
