A New Game of Thrones Tabletop Miniatures Game is Coming in 2018 (VIDEO)
Even though George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire series was first published in 1996, it wasn’t until recently that Game of Thrones became a cult hit worldwide. From the sometimes loveable, often conflicting and heartbreaking world and characters, Westeros has become a pop-culture phenomenon. So much so that CMON Limited and Dark Sword Miniatures have teamed up to bring into the world a Game of Thrones tabletop succinctly called A Song of Ice & Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game. As can be viewed below, a Kickstarter for the game began on July 25th, 2017 and was successfully backed and ended in this month by 9,040 backers that resulted in over 1.6 million dollars in pledges. Impressive. For an in-depth showcase of game pieces and play, check out the video below:
The whole premise of A Song of Ice & Fire is this: players take control as their favored house by utilizing pre-assembled trays of miniature figures, dice, cards, a tactics board, tokens and other tools to recreate battles and large-scale wars from the series. There’s even a Rank System that “changes a unit’s capabilities as the battle” continues, a Tactics System that “provides strategic powers fueled by a finite source”, and alternating activations to keep it fresh and engaging. Of course, the clash between Stark and Lannister is inevitable.
As the lands of Westeros descends into chaos, so begins the war of the five kings. Led by Robb Stark and Lord Greatjon Umber, the loyal Stark’s sworn swords will not break easily, bound together by their loyalty and courage. But their southward march means clashing with Ser Jaime Lannister and The Mountain himself. With their richly-armed regulars at the ready, House Lannister prepares to bring the Direwolf to heel.”
