Another April Fools’ Day is upon us and many on the internet have been wary of the annual tradition for social media pages related to gaming properties making joke announcements that turn out to be false. One such game franchise that has been known to participate in April Fools hijinx has been Final Fantasy. Square Enix has proven to uphold their tradition with a new Final Fantasy XIV April Fools video. This time, the video parodies the mobile gaming hit Pokemon Go, but decidedly, this video actually seems to poke more fun at Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

Square Enix released the new Final Fantasy XIV April Fools video today to celebrate the yearly tradition on their official Final Fantasy XIV YouTube channel. The spoof video presents a new mobile AR spin-off of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, now matching elements of that online game with the gameplay of Pokemon Go. The video recognizes that a significant portion of the time spent in FFXIV involves gathering resources by mining, fishing and other means. The main purpose of this fake mobile game would be to find such resources away from the player’s PC or console and out in the real world.

Players are shown gathering in a park and tapping on their phones to mine for resources, like the catching mechanics in Pokemon GO. The video also presents a device resembling a selfie stick they call the Final Fantasy XIV Online GO Harvesting Stick. Players would affix their phones at the end of the stick, and mimic the actions of a miner or fisher to further be immersed in the experience. Naturally, using a phone to extract fake minerals from real trees and rocks has disastrous results. Still, there are probably some players that wouldn’t mind this opportunity to grind for materials in the real world. Maybe it wouldn’t be that unreasonable to fantasize about?
