Final Fantasy VII Remake Will Remove Some Materia, Add New Ones

Square Enix’s presentation at E3 2019 served as a turning point for the Final Fantasy VII Remake, reinvigorating the fan base with loads of new footage and the promise of a tangible, solid Q1 2020 release date. Now that we’re less than a year away from the first game’s release date, the Japanese publisher has relaxed its guard and begun to offer new tidbits of information regarding the highly anticipated remake, revealing that the title won’t be a 1-1 recreation in regards to the game’s materia selection.

The news comes by way of a recent interview with Famitsu (via Game Informer), wherein game director Tetsuya Nomura revealed that, while materia would still be in the remake, some of the materia from the original game would not be making a return. This of course makes a good deal of sense given that the combat has evolved drastically from what was found in the original game, and as such some of the materia – Long Range and Slash-all, for example – would not translate well into the remake. The good news is that, per Nomura-san, there will also be some new materia added in, one of which is the new Wolf summon that we’ve previously heard about.

As difficult as it is to develop a remake to a game, Square Enix certainly seems to be on the right track in its attempt to deliver a Final Fantasy VII Remake that appeases both fans of the original game, and those looking to jump into the Final Fantasy series for the first time.

Final Fantasy VII Remake releases exclusively for the PlayStation 4 on March 3, 2020.
