Fallout: New California Devs Address Shut Down Concerns Following Board Game Reveal

Fallout: New California

The upcoming Fallout: New California board game is set to take players away from their monitors and back to the tabletops. However, the announcement of the board game has the developers of the New California mod a bit worried. After all, they’ve been working on the prequel to New Vegas for quite some time.

Now that Fantasy Flight has announced an expansion to their highly successful Fallout: The Board Game, the New California devs that have been working on the mod for over five years are now concerned. “And now this crap, with a Fallout: New California with a license from Bethesda,” they said in a Facebook post.

“They have every legal right to C&D us without hesitation,” the devs continued. “It would be effortless on their part to wipe us out with a single email, erasing 7 years of work.” They went on to point out how well-known their mod and the name of it are, and that they had to have known when choosing the name for their board game.

We have a Wikipedia page, we have the first 19 pages on Google search results, the top results are about us, there are news interviews and lets plays and single videos WITH MORE VIEWS THAN THEIR ENTIRE COMPANY YOUTUBE CHANNEL — and they still named their board game Fallout: New California.”

The post is clearly out of frustration, and rightfully so. They’ve been working hard for years on a mod that could be wiped away in an instant. The devs are certainly scrambling to finish everything before Bethesda takes action, but if they do, the New California team potentially has a backup plan. When asked if it is too late to revert back to the Project Brazil name, they said, “Fallback Option. I’d have to scrub it off the videos and that would suck, but I have the art assets still so it wouldn’t be impossible, just a HUGE waste of time.”

Whatever does end up happening, it will be interesting to see. Is Bethesda going to play nice in the sandbox, or will the New California team be left with nothing after all is said and done? Only time will tell. Tentatively, the New California mod is set to launch on October 23, but we imagine plans will change.
