EA Motive Working On Action Game With Aspects No One’s “Ever Seen Before”

EA Motive

The news surrounding Electronics Arts as of late has been negative. A lot of this is attributed to the acquisition of studios that many believe will just be shut down in the future, the actual closing down of one, and the controversy that is the release of Star Wars Battlefront II and its microtransactions. That being said, a recent talk provides a peek at what’s to come out of the EA Motive studio in Montreal.

While speaking at the UBS Global Technology Conference (via Gamesindustry.biz), CFO Blake Jorgensen dove into the topic of money. He discussed the company’s subscription services and what it will take to keep the revenue coming in. However, it was one little piece of information that seems to stick out. EA isn’t exactly known for their action titles, but it looks like they are trying to change that. Anthem is already being set up to be a franchise, while something that EA Motive is working on might possibly be a game-changer.

We have a team in Montreal that is building a brand new action franchise, probably for our Fiscal [Year] 2021 that also looks fantastic and very exciting. A new game, with a lot of new interesting gameplay that I don’t think anyone’s ever seen before.”

Either Jorgensen isn’t very familiar with action games, or they are genuinely developing something that no one’s “ever seen before.” If that is the case, exciting times are ahead because it means that gaming is continuing to evolve. As stated above, the company doesn’t have much of a presence in the action genre, but they aim to change that:

Action is clearly the place we’re missing the most, and the reason we’re building Anthem and the new title that Jade Raymond’s team at Motive is building in Montreal. That’s the largest sector in gaming. It’s one we haven’t spent a lot of time in because we were so focused on sports and first-person shooters. We feel like there’s a huge opportunity there.”

And who knows, maybe microtransactions will be a thing of the past by 2021. Only time will tell if they are creating something unique, or if this is just to get fans off their back about the current state of things.
