Dota 2 Receives First Official Co-Op Story Campaign – Siltbreaker: Act I
Valve’s free-to-play MOBA game Dota 2 has graced the competitive online community since 2013, achieving sky-high success as a popular eSport. Because of this, not many expected the action-oriented game to employ much of a story campaign as the game’s major draw is in skill-based tournaments, not lore-driven narrative. Well, that’s all about to change now through Siltbreaker, the first official co-op multiplayer campaign for Dota 2.
The first of these campaigns titled Act I: The Sands of Fate will see the introduction of the titular Siltbreaker, a mysterious figure who hails from the depths of Dark Reef. “Four chosen defenders” will be tasked with tracking him down after the powerful foe summons an “enthralled host of followers” and presumably begins making trouble where there wasn’t trouble before. One of these fearsome minions is “Rhyzik the Corruptor”, a “twisted creation” that appears to be the polar opposite of a cuddly bunny, based on this article’s teaser image.
The Siltbreaker campaign will also feature quest-specific items called “Artifacts”, which players can collect and equip in their inventory as they progress through the campaign. Other additions the new multiplayer mode brings are new characters, some of which will have connections to established Dota mythology. One of the more exciting potential arrivals are brand new powers and abilities, an idea Valve has not exactly shied away from.
As of now, the only way to obtain the Siltbreaker campaign is to purchase Dota 2‘s International 2017 Battle Pass. While some players may groan at the $10 USD price, especially since the MOBA is a free-to-play game, the pass actually has a considerable amount of content. Among a treasure trove of other goodies, the pass includes fresh quests, in-game wagering, and yes, there are hats too.
Siltbreaker seems like a welcome addition to Dota 2 and gives long-time fans added incentive to play. Perhaps the added story aspect may even bring new players into the fold, which seems like the best plan seeing as how powerful the character of Siltbreaker has been built up to be.
