Discord Reportedly Ends Talks With Microsoft About Acquisition
It was reported just last month that Microsoft was apparently ready to acquire popular social app Discord for bags upon bags of cash. Many thought it just might happen, especially since Microsoft had just closed the deal on acquiring Bethesda. That said, it is now being reported that Discord has ceased all talks and will not be acquired at this time.
The report in question comes from The Wall Street Journal (via Game Informer), who recently stated that “according to people familiar with the matter,” Discord has ended any talks to be acquired by potential buyers including the likes of Microsoft. According to those familiar with the situation, Discord had a rather simple reason for ending the talks: they believe they are doing just fine by themselves. After all, the massively popular app is valued at around $7 billion.
There is no denying that Microsoft has been on a bit of an acquisition spree as of late, especially when it comes to bolstering the Xbox Game Pass lineup. Following the Bethesda acquisition, it was revealed that the once-PlayStation-exclusive MLB The Show 21 would be coming to Game Pass as well as People Can Fly’s Outriders. Adding improved communicative functionality via the powers of Discord would have been the icing on the cake. However, it doesn’t look like that’ll be happening anytime soon. Then again, this doesn’t mean talks can’t resume somewhere down the road. Only time will tell.
