High-End Specs Won’t Be Among Destiny 2’s PC Requirements – No Dedicated Servers

Destiny 2's PC requirements

Since the announcement that Destiny 2 would be coming to PC, fans have been waiting in anticipation to hear more. With E3 closing in, players are getting a trickle of information leading up to big reveals on their favorite games and here is no exception. Among the information is the release of specifications within Destiny 2’s PC requirements, at least in part.

David Shaw, the PC lead on the coming sequel, spoke at length with PC Gamer about Destiny 2’s PC requirements. In some cases, he didn’t have answers yet, or couldn’t give them, and in others, he had a lot to say. In regards to dedicated servers, his answer was pretty short.

We do not have dedicated servers for Destiny 2 on PC.”

This doesn’t mean they aren’t aware of concerns with lag and latency that PC users may have. Bungie and Vicarious Visions have been working together on Destiny 2’s PC requirements to make sure the game runs smoothly and ensure the game is accessible to as many players as possible. Here is what Shaw had to say about the partnership:

So we kind of have embarked on an interesting situation. We’re not outsourcing it. Instead, we’ve developed this true partnership with Vicarious Visions in Albany, New York. We look at them as an extended part of the dev team. There’s a group of folks there that we’re working with—I’m literally working with them every single day. There’s emails, there’s video conferencing, sometimes we’re out at V.V., sometimes they’re at Bungie. We’ve crafted a strong partnership with them. Bungie is leading the game; it is absolute a Bungie project. But the partnership we have with V.V. has been phenomenally successful. When you play the game, hopefully it shows the quality of work that that team has done. “

Shaw also discussed concerns with latency and the concern that Destiny 2’s PC requirements would mean upgrading current rigs to accommodate the game. In terms of latency, they are working hard to develop the “best experience possible”. Beyond that, Shaw was optimistic about the topic of upgrades:

No, no, no. So, we’re not announcing a min spec or recommended spec today. We’ll talk about that in the future. But no, you absolutely won’t have to buy the latest and greatest hardware to be able to play the game and have a fun, quality experience.

While information isn’t as huge as fans may like, there are some nuggets there that will keep players satisfied until E3 when the big announcements start rolling out. Destiny 2’s PC requirements are looking to be in the realm of possibility for most players, and we’ll know for sure in the next month or so.
