Deadmau5 Issues Apology Following His Attack on Twitch After Being Banned for a Homophobic Slur

In more recent generations, perhaps no external force has had as much of an impact on video games and gamer culture than the rise in popularity of live-streaming. While Twitch and sites like it have brought many positive results, such as creating communities and opportunities to raise money for charity, these microcosms also often result in harassment and general offensive communications, enough for Twitch to address it in their official guidelines. Now, it appears that musician Deadmau5 has unfortunately been witnessed using homophobic language on Twitch.

Famed EDM musician Joel “Deadmau5” Zimmerman has been a known fan of video games, and has had a Twitch channel of his own for some time now. Recently, Deadmau5 held a live-streaming session in which he broadcasted his gameplay of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. At one point during the stream, Deadmau5 was heard saying “Is that some f***ing c**k-sucking stream sniper,” and also followed up this statement with use of a homophobic slur. Since this portion of the livestream, clips of Deadmau5 saying these hateful exclamations have made their way to sites like TMZ.

After this clip went somewhat viral, Deadmau5 then preceded to make a statement on Reddit, which was preserved by some witnesses on Imgur after eventually being taken down from the site. Many believed that this “apology” from Deadmau5 was insufficient, as it seemed like he was passing the blame to Twitch and other external parties rather than himself.

He then made a follow-up apology acknowledging both his original mistakes and half-hearted apology, stating that he wants to be a better person. “I realize that trying to somewhat dismiss it as ‘gamer culture’ was even worse,” he told TMZ. “I don’t know why I did that. But I do know it was stupid and insensitive and I feel even more ashamed. This was my worst moment.” The future will tell if Deadmau5 follows through with these aspirations, and while it took some time to penetrate his thick helmet’s skull, it seems for now his big mouse ears are willing to listen.
