Darksiders III Puts Heavier Focus On Gameplay, Story Comes Second

In Darksiders III, players will have the chance to step into the role of Fury and take up her task of hunting down and destroying the Seven Deadly Sins. While many video games put a heavy focus on story, the Darksiders series has always done the exact opposite by putting its focus on gameplay, with a potent mix of combat, puzzle-solving, and exploration that keeps gamers coming back for more. According to developer Gunfire Games, the latest entry in the series will continue its tradition of putting gameplay first, and story second.

In a recent with Official PlayStation Magazine, Gunfire Games Co-Founder David Adams elaborated on the mix of gameplay and story within Darksiders III, revealing that while players won’t be bombarded with cutscenes, key story moments will still be present. “Darksiders is and has always been a video game,” Adams said.

There’s still cool cutscenes and we have scenes around all of the Sins, and cool key story moments, but you’re not being bombarded by story – you’re running around fighting stuff and solving puzzles. That was a purposeful decision.”

Later in the interview, Adams also addressed some of the issues players had with Darksiders II, namely its prevalent RPG elements. “When Darksiders II came out people were like, “What’s all this RPG crap doing in my Darksiders game,” he said. “You’ve got to take some risks or else the games become stale. But you’ve got to walk the line between risk and not completely betraying what makes the franchise what it is.”

Fans will get their chance to see how well Darksiders III walks the line when it releases for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 27, 2018.
