Bethesda Not Even Considering Battle Royale, According To Pete Hines

Battle Royale

It seems, of late, that Battle Royale is sweeping the industry. Many titles have begun adding the feature to their games as Fortnite and PUBG dominate the wildly popular 100 player deathmatch. Bethesda, however, recently noted that the idea of Battle Royale in their games is not even a blip on their radar.

VP Pete Hines recently had an interview that focused on the future of Bethesda and why the company isn’t interested in Battle Royale. While Fallout 76 is focusing on an online approach, they have no interest in extending the play to a chaotic every player for themselves Power Armor battle to the death. Here is what Hines had to say about how the company approaches new trends in gaming:

If it sounds interesting, if it’s something the devs are clearly excited about, and it’s something we think is unique and different, that’s trying something new or doing something new, that’s what gets me excited.”

Bethesda has always had a good track record, and while they don’t always hit the mark with everything fans desire, they do produce quality games that stand out. With Battle Royale seemingly at peak popularity, Bethesda not only seeks to stand out, but also finds the rehashed concept a bit boring as Hines pointed out in the interview:

If it’s like ‘Well, these guys did this, so we’re gonna do this,’ I can’t stay awake. ‘Hey, here’s our Battle Royale game!’ No thank you. Not even remotely interested. That’s not who we are as Bethesda; that’s not how we’ve gotten to where we are over the last 30-odd years. And honestly, I think our devs know better than to say ‘Oh, we’re just gonna riff off of something that somebody else is doing.'”

This firm stance on Battle Royale and other popular trends definitely sets Bethesda apart. With an already saturated market, something fresh from the developers might be just what the industry needs to keep fans from burning out. With the recent Fallout 76 press conference at QuakeCon putting many fears to rest, it will be interesting to see how the online aspect of their game plays out. If nothing else, fans can take comfort knowing they have something different to turn to when they get tired of the fray.
