Daisy Ridley Doesn’t Want To Play Rey After Star Wars: Episode IX
The Disney purchase of Lucasfilm brought announcements of new films and a breath of new life into the Star Wars franchise. In 2015, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” the 7th movie in the epic saga, brought newcomer Daisy Ridley from relative obscurity into the Hollywood spotlight.
While her star may be rising, and her character, Rey, is now an important central figure in the new trilogy, her time with Lucasfilm may be ending. The actor revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone that the last movie, “Star Wars: Episode IX” would be the last movie in which she portrays Rey.
“No,” she said. “For me, I didn’t really know what I was signing on to. I hadn’t read the script, but from what I could tell, it was really nice people involved, so I was just like, ‘Awesome.’ Now I think I am even luckier than I knew then, to be part of something that feels so like coming home now.”
To clarify further, she said, “No, no, no. I am really excited to do the third thing and round it out, because ultimately, what I was signing on to was three films. So in my head, it’s three films. I think it will feel like the right time to round it out.”
Earlier this month, Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, implied that Star Wars might not be done with Rey after Episode IX.
We’re sitting down now, we’re talking about the next ten years of Star Wars stories, and we’re looking at narratively where that might go. Future stories beyond ‘Episode IX’ with these new characters: Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8.”
Whether this means that future Star Wars movies will either have Rey written out, or cast a new actress in the popular role is unclear. What is clear is that fans of the franchise will be watching very closely. What do you think about her thoughts on her character and her place in the franchise?
