Cyberpunk 2077 Quests Will All Be Hand-Crafted, Not Procedurally Generated

Cyberpunk 2077 Quests

Cyberpunk 2077 seems to be coming along quite nicely, positioning itself as perhaps the title gamers are most excited for in 2020. CD Projekt Red has clearly been sparing no cost in both time and money for the project. With features like in-game ride-sharing services and AI that responds to player lifestyle choices, this game will feel as real and submersive as any game before may have ever been. Like most major world open titles, it was obvious that this game’s massive open world would provide many side quest opportunities. However, unlike other open world games, none of the Cyberpunk 2077 quests will Be procedurally generated, but will instead see each one carefully hand-crafted.

CD Projekt Red recently shared a developer spotlight interview with Cyberpunk 2077 Quest Designer Philipp Weber on their official website’s blog. In the interview, Weber responds to many questions about the process of designing and constructing quests. One particular question specifically asked whether the game would have any procedurally generated quests, to which Weber responds as follows:

Every quest in the game is handcrafted. For us, quality is always more important than quantity, and we just couldn’t deliver this quality with modules we assemble in different ways to create these random quests. We don’t just want to keep people busy, but actually give them something to do that’s worth their while.”

Weber does also specify that even with all of the quests being manually developed, the team sought to fill the game up with as many as possible to keep players engaged and feel fulfilled as far as quantity is concerned. While this may come as a bit of a disappointment to some that would have preferred an infinite number of procedurally generated quests, this route does tend to favor narrative enrichment and world-building, which CD Projekt Red has been known to excel at. Not to mention with the possibility of additional content after the game’s launch, the ability to augment the game like a human body in the Cyberpunk future can only go up from there.
