Cyberpunk 2077’s Development Is Being Compared to BioWare’s Anthem
Crunch has been the talk of the gaming industry over recent months, especially with reports seemingly popping up left and right about how some developers are experiencing this very issue. One notable example would be that of BioWare and their most recent title, Anthem. That said, it would appear that CD Projekt RED may be going through the same troubles with the development of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077.
A handful of former CD Projekt RED employees recently reached out to Kotaku about the crunch being experienced at the studio during Cyberpunk 2077’s development. “I’ve felt that there are hundreds of parallels that could be drawn between the story of the rocky development of Anthem and the story of the rocky and even-more-rocky-to-become development of Cyberpunk 2077,” one of them said.
At times, I’ve felt I could just replace the studio name and the game title, and it would all look so similar, almost identical.”
As many of you know, Anthem has experienced nothing but problems since it was in development, when the team working on it were suffering through some rather intense crunch to get the job done. However, while it would appear that CDPR is experiencing similar woes, the studio is trying to combat this.
“We’ve been working toward it for some time already,” co-founder Marcin Iwiński said. “We’ve been communicating clearly to people that of course there are certain moments where we need to work harder—like I think the E3 demo is a pretty good example—but we want to be more humane and treat people with respect. If they need to take time off, they can take time off. Nobody will be frowned upon if this will be requested.”
Unfortunately, crunch continues to be a problem in the industry as a whole, and one can only hope that something is done about it in the near future. As for Cyberpunk 2077, more will be revealed about the game at this year’s E3, which is just three weeks away.
