Commander Keen Revived As A Free To Play Game (VIDEO)

Commander Keen

Remasters and new titles for classic franchises held a major presence at this year’s E3, giving fans plenty of hope for the return of nostalgic wonder. One of the announcements was for the rebirth of the iconic Commander Keen franchise, though this time it will be arriving in a very different format than its predecessor.

The original Commander Keen was a side-scrolling platformer title that saw players take on the role of an 8-year-old genius named Billy Blaze as he defends the Earth from alien threats with his trusty homemade spaceship, raygun, and pogo stick. Rather than use the classic gameplay and character, Bethesda has opted instead to bring two new characters to the mix, Keen’s twin son and daughter, and the company has decided to turn the iconic PC title into a free-to-play mobile game.

Players will play through various stages and eliminate enemies by collecting various items scattered throughout. It seems as though there may also be a bit of story involved as well as a PvP mode allowing players to control one of the siblings and fight against the other in a similar fashion to the single-player experience.

Bethesda has been making a push for mobile titles based on their franchises like Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and more in recent years. Only time will tell if the mobile Commander Keen reboot will be able to live up to its predecessor. As with many of the showings at E3 this year, the mobile Commander Keen reboot has yet to receive a release date though the developers mention that it is coming soon for iOS and Android devices.
