We’ve all been there as players, a sudden wave of missionaries arrives on your shores, converts everything, and fades off into the fog of war. A recent fan discovery may have an explanation as to why some AI focus solely on religion, letting the rest of their priorities fall by the wayside. A simple Civilization VI code typo may be to blame for the sometimes fanatical behavior of some AI as discovered by a fan earlier this week.

The bug created by the Civilization VI code typo is all because of a single word. In a post on the “Something Awful” thread, an irregularity was noticed in the code that caused their default priorities to go off the rails. The reason is that the word “yield” is spelled “yeild”. The simple typo has been the cause of many a weirdly imbalanced game.

According to the player who revealed the Civilization VI code typo, a Yield code like YIELD_PRODUCTION should make the leader focus on production and perform well or poorly depending on the value assigned. With the typo, the game doesn’t recognize those values, so any leader carrying it will only focus on what it does recognize. This means you have Gandhi giving Genghis Kahn a run for his money, while other leaders amble about building religious units as their army, expansion, and production suffer.

Firaxis did address the Civilization VI code typo in a statement to PC Gamer. According to the company, they are aware of the problem and plan to have it fixed in the next game update. While it’s not a game-breaking buy, the fix should yield some very different results in the next playthrough.
